Standing for All of Us! Why I Support Mayor Romano and Deputy Mayor Cohen

To the Editor and the Residents of Millburn Township

My name is Jorge Masropietro, and I am a proud resident of Millburn / Short Hills. Many years ago, I made the conscious choice to become a citizen of the United States. I did so because I believe in the promise of this country: a nation built on the rule of law, due process and the fundamental idea that all people deserve to be treated with dignity.

I am writing today to offer my wholehearted endorsement of the reelection of our Mayor, Annette Romano, and the Deputy Mayor, Michael Cohen, whose recent statement regarding the actions of ICE in our community reaffirmed the very principles I hold so dear.

When I read their statement, I felt a profound sense of relief and pride. As an immigrant, it is impossible not to be concerned by the sight of federal agents in tactical gear taking people from their homes without transparency. This is not the America I chose to be a part of. Their unequivocal declaration that such actions are “A healthy democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear,” spoke directly to my heart.

This isn’t just about immigration. This is about the character of our leadership and the soul of our town. Our Mayor and Deputy Mayor stood up not just for immigrants, but for every single resident. They defended the idea that our town is an “inclusive community” and that we “stand with all of our families, regardless of where they were born.” They chose to protect the safety and constitutional rights of everyone, reminding us that true leadership means ensuring the law is applied fairly and humanely.

In a time of division, both Annette Romano and Michael Cohen have shown us what true, principled leadership looks like. They have demonstrated the courage to stand up for the values that make Millburn Township a wonderful place to live. I am grateful for their service and urge my fellow residents to join me in supporting a leader who so clearly stands for all of us.
