Romano & Cohen Speak Out Against Recent ICE Activity In Millburn

To the residents of Millburn-Short Hills,

We write to you today with deep concern following recent reports of Federal Immigration Enforcement (ICE) actions taking place in our community. Accounts of agents in tactical gear, with faces obscured, detaining residents in our neighborhoods have understandably caused distress and alarm. These incidents do not reflect the values we hold as a community.

Let us be clear: Millburn Township is a town rooted in the rule of law and guided by a strong respect for due process. We expect all law enforcement agencies, local, state or federal, to operate with transparency, accountability and in accordance with the law. Actions that bypass these standards undermine both individual rights and the trust that holds our community together. A healthy democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear.

The heart of Millburn-Short Hills is its people. We are proud to be an inclusive, welcoming community where families of all backgrounds live, work, and care for one another. What we’ve seen in recent days threatens the sense of security and belonging that defines our town. It runs counter to our values and weakens the bonds that unite us.

In response, we are taking immediate steps. We are in direct contact with our Chief of Police to ensure that our local law enforcement remains fully informed and continues to prioritize the safety and constitutional rights of every resident. We are also engaging official channels to seek clarity and accountability from ICE leadership. We will continue to advocate strongly for the rights and well-being of our community.

To every resident of Millburn, your town government stands firmly with you. We remain committed to preserving a community where dignity, respect, and fairness are not just ideals, but everyday realities. Together, we will ensure Millburn Township remains a safe, supportive, and welcoming place for all who call it home.
